At the beginning, your spells are not powerful, actually they are rather weak but they are useful. For example, the heal-self spell can cut down on your down-time, and the mana missile spell helps with finishing off fleeing monsters. At the start, do not think too much about strong magic ability. You just take every necessary step to become a good mage, since this is long and expensive process.
